3E Law Shun Yan

Throughout November in this school year, I was honored to be selected to participate in the exchange programme with Trevor Day School in Manhattan, New York, in which Bear, a student from Trevor, came for his 2-week stay in Hong Kong.

During Bear’s exchange journey, not only did he live in my home, but we also attended school together and participated in the Student’s Activities Week, in which we visited numerous historic sites and indigenous villages in Hong Kong. Through this invaluable experience, Bear was able to catch a glimpse of an entirely new side of Hong Kong that differs from the towering skyscrapers and blinking lights of Victoria Harbor. Outside school, we spent time exploring the metropolis, including going to the peak to observe the beautiful night view of Hong Kong, visiting subdivided flats to gain insight into the local housing problems, taking the star ferry, going to Ngong Ping 360, shopping at various malls, and tasting traditional street food of Hong Kong.

Although I had limited time outside school, I still persevered and gave Bear a unique and rewarding experience that was jam-packed with various activities. This programme also made me realise that communication and commitment are the pivotal components to foster long-lasting relationships. Despite our vastly distinct personalities and backgrounds, we still put our differences aside and discussed our future plans, including visiting malls on weekdays and outlying islands on the weekends. This unforgettable journey also improved my adaptability to unexpected circumstances, handling them with courage and independence.

Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to the school for providing me with this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn about foreign cultures and share our local customs with my exchange buddy during the programme. I am looking forward to another international journey where I can be exposed to other cultures around the world.
