I bet you never got to stick both your feet in a thick, wet mud pit to make clay bricks!
This trip may not have been the most relaxing or luxurious but it undoubtedly outshined all the other overseas learning programmes by being one of the most fulfilling, fun and rewarding ones I had ever joined.
The 17 of us embarked on our journey to Laos, an unfamiliar nation to most of us, in mid-November. That was followed by 6 jam-packed days of activity, service, and sightseeing.
We visited a village school, where we spent 2 days mixing clay, molding bricks and building walls to construct a new dormitory. Albeit exhausting, it was worth every drop of sweat to see our efforts come to fruition, knowing that we had actually done some service to help out the local schoolchildren. Each day we would get to interact with them after work, playing frisbee, football and tree-climbing while having such an amazing time together despite the language barrier. They were all such energetic, playful, and precious angels, their genuine laughter still echoing in my head.
The trip was more than just service. We visited numerous stunning natural wonders and historical landmarks around Laos, including the Kuang Si Falls, Patuxay and Mount Phousi. With speedy vans to take us from site to site, we got a considerable glimpse into Laos culture and history. Additionally, every other night we got to visit a local night market, trying out the local specialties and checking out beautiful handpainted bookmarks!
