Family Friendly Hotel – Clayton Hotel Sligo

Last month just before the October midterm break myself, himself and the 4 kids stayed in Clayton Hotel Sligo as we were invited down to review it and have a look at their new Sensory Room for kids! I’m always looking for a good family-friendly hotel to add to my list of recommendations so I jumped at the chance of course.

Outside, the hotel looks like a castle, really beautiful when you are driving up. There were two lovely old chapels on the grounds too where they have civil ceremonies and drinks receptions.

Our room was fabulous. I have no pics unfortunately, I had them but they aren’t on the memory card but trust me when I say it was perfect for large families. We stayed in a large 2 bedroom family suite which was basically two interconnecting rooms. Loads of room for 6 of us. Nothing worse than being stuck in a pokey hotel room on top of each other. One side of the room had the bathroom, a little kitchen area and 2 single beds where the 2 older kids slept. Then on the other side was our big king bed and a single bed where the toddler slept. The baby slept in a travel cot that the hotel provided. Both rooms had a tv too 😉

I was gutted we missed kids club season but there were lots for the to do kids in the hotel regardless. Swimming, crazy golf (€3pp I think!), a playroom and our favorite, a sensory playroom. The sensory playroom is a first for a hotel in Ireland and I just think it’s nice to see places accommodating for kids with extra needs. I don’t have a child with a lot of sensory issues but I can imagine this room might help make a family break that bit more comfortable. The lights are low, there is soothing music on and lots of little nik naks to play with. Very relaxed feel. There is a ball pit at the end with soft padding too.

Glencar Waterfall is a must see if you head to Sligo. It was really stunning. It’s a very short walk to the waterfall, like 3 mins from the car park so you can bring a buggy. As you walk up further there are some steps (maybe 20) but you can still see from there or you can leave the buggy at the bottom of the steps like we did. Beside the carpark, before you walk up to the waterfall is a little playground and a very cozy coffee shop. I have to say it was probably my fave part of our trip to Sligo. Waterfall, playground and homemade soup afterward. Oh, and did I mention it’s free to go see Glencar Waterfall. Amazing.

We also went on a bit of a drive (about 30 mins) to Mullaghmore, a little seaside town. Had a nice walk along the harbour, the kids loved that and had food in The Boatman’s Bar.

Rosses Point is another nice spot and only a 10-minute drive away. The beach would be lovely in Summer time but the kids had fun climbing the rocks and looking at the rock pools.

Overall we loved our stay between loads to do around Sligo and in the hotel itself for adults and kids from the spa for the grown-ups to crazy golf the kids…and grown-ups too I guess! I can’t go without saying how friendly and accommodating every single staff member of the hotel was, it makes all the difference when staying away from home especially with kids. Just as an example…the soup of the day was carrot and my 6-year-old wasn’t sure he liked carrot soup so we were going to pick something else but the waiter insisted on giving him a little bowl to taste. Turned out all the kids loved it so they were fed and happy. Just loads of little things like that, they went above and beyond to all their customers and guests from what I could see.

I would definitely go back to The Clayton Hotel Sligo for their hospitality, large family rooms and great amenities both in the hotel around the area. Would be a beautiful spot in summer time. I want to go back to that waterfall, it was my fave part, we got some fab family photos 🙂

*Disclaimer we were invited down for 2 nights to Clayton Hotel free of charge in exchange for a review & paid for the 3rd night ourselves at a reduced rate. As always views and opinions expressed are my own.
